well, for one thing, it's how you listen to it - you obviously have never
heard an audigy card in action or wouldn't bother arguing this. As others
have pointed out, tests show itunes to be inferrior for mp3 encoding.

as for the rest of it - I think you have it wrong, see, my DVD drive (from
which I rip) is connected via the CD_SPDIF cable to the digital port on the
card -
http://www.soundblaster.com/resources/read.asp?ArticleID=33&PartID=6

"On the Sound Blaster Live!, there is a CD_SPDIF connector which lets you
connect the digital output from your CD-ROM drive to the cards. A digital
cable is bundled with the Sound Blaster Live! for this purpose .

To use the digital output from your CD-ROM, connect the supplied digital
cable from the digital output of your CD-ROM to the CD_SPDIF connector on the
Sound Blaster Live! (see diagram below). You can control the volume of the CD
by using the CD Digital slider on the Sound Blaster Live! mixer. If you are
using the CD_SPDIF connector for your CD-ROM, you should mute the regular CD
Audio input of the mixer so that you will not get a doubled sound."

so, as you can see, there is no analog to digital conversion taking place -
maybe there was 5 years ago, but not anymore.
