It sounds like kppp isn't adding the DEFAULTROUTE flag to ppd's options.
Use kppp to start you ppp connecion and then use the "route -n" command to
see where your packets are destined (the -n flag will omit name lookups..
handy of your netowrk connection isn't working and you can't get to a
nameserver :)

If it's not, check kppd's options to make sure it's passing the
defaultroute flag and / or force the route with;
"route add default ip.address.of.the.other.end.of.ppp.connection"

Also, do check the info in /var/log/messages. If ppd is having an issue,
that's where it'll end up being reported (typically in great detail :)

It's been a while since I actually used ppp, so uhh.. the kppp stuff might
be wring, and you may need to set the optons in /etc/ppp or something
