Thank you! Checking (enabling) the BootX "No Video Driver" option did it. Up
and running w/ kernel 2.2.18pre11-ben1, though no mouse. Of course, my
original problem was the slow video in console and the horrible redraws in
X, so I'm concerned that enabling this option puts me back to where I
started.

Well, first to read BenH and Franz's pages on how to fix the mouse problem,
then on to replacing Xpmac.rev10 w/ XF4. Gee, maybe one day I'll get past
trying to make Linux work and actually do something productive with it.

First of all, try a slightly older kernel 2.2.15pre19 from Ben's
website. Second use "no video" in the BootX options. Third of all make
sure you have the correct system.map and modules files. I have had
problems with the 2.2.15-2.9.0 kernel on my G4 but the later kernel fixed
the problems i was having. I'm not 2.2.17 at all.

I hope this helps
