I'm not exactly sure what the best solution is, but the one I fell on
was to find the /etc/resolv.conf file and make it readable to other
users. (I think in the default red hat setup it's strictly root's, and
there are probably good reasons for that, but i don't know what they
are.) I was told it also helps (but again, I'm rather ignorant) to add
the line, beneath the server numbers,

domain mydomain.com

where mydomain.com is your ISP.

good luck. There's another resolv.conf in /etc/ppp, but I think the one
at fault is the one in /etc.
