A friend of mine had a Mac running no problems whatsoever. Then he
installed some fancy graphics programs (quark, photoshop, yada) and
started to get strange errors when using the swap those programs use.
Thinking it hard drive related, he changed hard drives. No dice.
Quark's technical staff figured it out finally, his scsi card was
bad. It only was a problem in Quark. Never a problem in any other
software. But it was a hardware issue, not a software issue. It was
just one piece of software that brought it out... Quark.
There was (still is?) an issue with the ethernet on early G3
PowerBooks under Linux. The issue didn't happen under Mac OS or
Darwin. When the LPPC Gurus looked at the code for Darwin's driver-
the guy had commented his code stating that a certain thing was being
done a certain way due to a hardware problem in the ethernet those
PB's use.
Apple knew about it, which is why their OS's were able to deal with
it much better. But the problem was in fact the hardware, not the
linux driver. The linux driver just had to be changed to compensate
for the hardware flaw.
