well, you could edit the file /etc/inittab (as root); the first non-comment line
should be something like:

         id:5:initdefault:

where `5' indicates the run level to set at boot time. now you can either:

        - replace that run level with another one (e.g. 2) or

        - replace it by `s': this is a special, single-user run level sometimes
        used for maintenance. anyhow, the computer will then stop early during
        the boot process, presenting you a root prompt. from there, you can select
        another run level by typing the command `init n', where n is the desired run
        level. the boot will then proceed as usual.
