I decided to build my own kernel. I started with the
2.2.15-2.8.0 source from the CS 1.2 distribution. (The xconfig
        tool is nice.)

It took a couple of tries, but it works now and I have power-
management support: I can put the PowerBook to sleep. The
little green light flashes and everything. Woohoo! The battery
monitoring tool (Batmon) also works. It's really big and ugly,
though. Anybody know of a smaller one? What would be nice is
an AfterStep Wharf module. If I can't find one, maybe I'll dust
off my X Windows books and write one.

A minor problem is that, when woken up, the screen is really
dark and I have to push the brightness (F2) key to get it back
        to normal.

My kernel is about .5 MB smaller than what's distributed with
CS 1.2. It also happens to fix an annoying problem I
discovered with the sound running under 2.2.6 that comes with
CS 1.1. If I made the Mac beep many times in succession, the
sound would change from a mildly pleasant beep to a harsh buzz.
The first time it happened, it scared the hell out of me since
it sounded like it was frying itself. But that's gone now.

I haven't tested PPP yet to see if it still works, however.

Incidentally, if I upgraded my kernel, XFree86, and many of the
RPMs I use, do I virtually have CS 1.2 or is there something
        else?

I'll send my kernel configuration file to anyone who asks.
(Personal requests, please; no need to clutter the list.)

        - Paul
