Well, what are your arguments to BootX?
What video options are you passing to kernel.
Make sure to UNcheck the 'no video driver' option !!

And using runlevel 5 is a bad idea. Change it to runlevel 3 so you boot
into command mode. To change runlevel open a file (my favourite) named
/etc/inittab . There will be a very plain explanation of what each
runlevel means, and a way to change it.

You can run Xconfigurator any time from command line by typing
Xconfigurator : ) Choose iMac monitor as type, it worked for me. It will
complain it failed but don't listen to it, something is buggy with it.
After it quits type 'startx' and see how it looks. You may need to
adjust position a little bit.
