Subject: ulimit error on login

Hey folks,
couple of questions...
1. Is there an archive (searchable?) of this list anywhere so I don't
stumble, offend, etc by asking a FAQ inadvertently? I did not notice
any mention of one on the YDL pages or the welcome note when I subbed.
2. I'm getting an error on login from bash that says:
bash: ulimit: cannot modify limit: Operation not permitted
I know that this is coming from bash reading the /etc/profile which
contains the line:
ulimit -c 1000000
The YDL man pages yield zero info on ulimit, but one of my intel
linux machines let me know that it is...
>SYNOPSIS
> Unimplemented system calls.
>
>DESCRIPTION
> These system calls are not implemented in the Linux 1.2.4
> kernel.
>
>RETURN VALUE
> These system calls always return -1 and set errno to
> ENOSYS.
>
>SEE ALSO
> obsolete(2), undocumented(2).
...which I find somewhat amusing, but not too informative.
I also noted that the line exists within the /etc/profile of the
intel box but bash does not cough up an identical error on login
there.
I have commented the line from the /etc/profile of my YDL box, and it
has the intended effect of ridding my login of the error, but the
question remains:
What does this "ulimit" thing do? ...and does removing it from
/etc/profile have any consequences beyond eliminating the error?
Thanks!
