I had the same problem when I tried to sut up a boot parttition on my
b/w G3. I thought it was because it was on the slave partition. But I
have successful back up boot on my G4 on a hard drive where the zip
drive used to be. I just could not get it to work, as much as I tried
on my G3.

Try if you could move your data around to have the boot partition as the
first one on the master drive.

example on mine:
hda:
6-Apple_Boot
7 - swap
8 - 9 Mac OS X boot strap and secondary loader
10 - UFS OS X (root directory)
11 - 13 UFS OSX (attempts to mount partitions like linux - 1/2 way there
I think)
14 - HFS (OS X bake up for my other OS X)
15 - OS 9.1

hdb:

2-15 all ext2fs for linux

Put your boot as the very first writable partition on the drive - it
took me a whil to figure this out..
It is greate to because if you clear your pram, it would default to your
boot partition. This shoud fix it...

good luck
