well, in general I would suggest fixing your kernal problkems first, as
they may be the root of the issue. past this I've found that wvdial sucks
a big one, try letting pppd do all the dialing and configurating... Read
the PPP-HOWTO and most importantly the pppd documentations, there's tons
of good stuff in there (with examples) that'll help you. By the end
you'll also more fully understnad the way PPP works (at least in linux)
and that will give you a better chance at fixing problems later on down
the road.
