a few more suggestions:
1) if you have yaboot on the first partition of your drive, you may need to
change the line "root=/dev/hda9" in the yaboot.conf file to "root=/dev/hda8"
or "root=/dev/hda7" (i can;t remember which right now. . .)
2) (and this may be easier) did you get the yellowdog CS-1.1-update
(goodies) cd? if not, you can download it from the yellowdog ftp site, or
sourceforge. it's in the ISO directory. this cd is meant for people
installing yellowdog on UMA machines (ibook, imac dv (what i used it on),
and new g4s). all you have to do is put the cd in and reboot while holding
down "C", just like with your macOS cd. it will launch the installer and
then prompt you for the regular CS-1.1 cd for the install. it worked great
on my imac dv, after having lost of difficulty and frustration very much
like your own.
